Spinal Decompression
Low back pain and associated complications such as buttock pain, leg pain, numbness and weakness is all too common an affliction in our society. The disability and agony that this causes in our life is staggering. When treating any disease it is essential to identify the cause. Anatomically, a large portion of acute and chronic low back pain generates from the disc (discogenic).
The discs are fluid filled structures between the vertebrae which act like shock absorbers. They also maintain space between the vertebrae to allow the nerves to send vital messages between the body and the brain. From injury, aging, poor posture, occupation and a slue of other causes, the discs lose their ability to hold the fluid resulting in a loss of disc height. This results in significantly increased pressure on the nerve, joint, cartilage and the disc itself. This results in the painful complaints causing patients to seek treatment.
The obvious goal of any effective treatment would be to increase the height of the problematic disc, thus “decompressing it”. Decompressing the disc, also known as “decreasing the axial load”, is accomplished in two ways, first by pulling the two ends of the area to be treated in opposite directions, “axially”. This has the unfortunate side effect of pulling the spine straight, thus decreasing the normal curve and resulting in an undesirable increased pressure on the disc long term.
The second and most modern way to decompress a disc non-surgically is by “two way extension traction” method. A specific machine is used to pull the spine in more than one direction, thus restoring the natural curve into the spine resulting in decreased axial load, (decompression), of the disc. Seeing a model of the spine makes it much easier to envision the result.
Achieving spinal decompression by curve restoration is natural to the body therefore providing lasting results which are easy to support and maintain.
The treatment of low back pain is very mechanical in nature and therefore can be difficult to understand. We offer a service to the public to help them investigate and choose the right choice of treatment. Please call our office at 860-621-0131 for a free, no obligation consultation and demonstration. This allows both the doctor and the patient to mutually decide if this treatment is the right choice in your case. Before treatment begins, a reasonable expectation of treatment plan and any possibly costs above and beyond insurance reimbursement will be discussed.

SpineCor Bracing
An acclaimed new back brace designed to treat people with scoliosisis making its Connecticut debut in the office of local chiropractor Dr. George Costanzo. Costanzo is the only chiropractor in the state with access to the SpineCor, a new brace produced in Canada which is significantly softer than the more commonly used ones. “The research shows that it works, but the orthopedic community has beenslow to pick up on it,” Costanzo said. “I’ve been following it for a long time, and attended some classes about it.”
Scoliosis is a medical condition where a person’s spine becomes curved rather than extending in a straight line. This often begins in adolescence, which is why public schools have conducted scoliosis examinations for years. The condition is often treated with back braces, which in the past were known for being cumbersome and often painful.
Costanzo said the SpineCor “gently” applied force to the spine to properly align it. “The hard braces can work, but they are extremely uncomfortable and it’s tough to get kids to wear them,” he said. “This is easier to get on, it’s softer, and it’s hard to tell it is even there. That especially is important to kids.” He added that these new braces were flexible enough to wear while doing daily activities, including sports. Because the SpineCor should not get wet, however, swimming with it is not recommended.
When he did not have access to the braces himself, Costanzo would recommend patients go out of state to get them. He accompanied one patient, Lisa Campo, to New York as part of his own research. Campo said she was blown away by how superior her new brace is. “I wish someone had brought this to my attention years earlier,” Campo said. “It’s incredible. It’s life changing. I’ve had chronic pain since I was 8 years old, and now I feel 20 years younger.”
Costanzo has gotten the brace for a handful of other patients as well. Costanzo said that the SpineCor was still relatively unknown in America despite the prevalence of scoliosis. “Right now, I’m trying to get this out into the community,” he said.
